Pubs in Blackheath

Now as this a democratic place, and the Greenwich possie couldn’t get the vote out, the South East London Tweetup is going to be hosted in Blackheath, although have mused that if this Tweetup goes well, then its only fair that Greenwich gets to host a X’mas get together.

Yesterday I decided I’d better do a field trip to the village to check up on the state of the locals. (I have assumed that noone who voted for Blackheath wanted to spend the evening in the Standard). So with a troop of teenagers coming round to the house and the Lion’s on the box I jumped onto the 380 bus and sped up from Charlton Slopes to the high veeldt of Blackheath.

The plan was a pint in each of the hostilaries of the village while watching the rugby. This plan backfired as only O’Neils bothered putting the rugby on. Other pubs had horse racing, or some strange game when the players didn’t pick the ball up and run with it. This sport someone explained is called ‘Football’ and is very popular. So it was 5 pints in O’Neils and a quick head round the door of the other pubs to see if the rugby was on then a dash back to the Irish place. Bonus points if anyone can remember the orginial name of the pub where O’Neils is now.

So what did I learn.

1. The railway, has a cider festival at the moment, for drinkers this may to place. However ifs its a nice evening not much space out side

2. O’Niels . No

3. Hare & Billet Lovely wood floors but can’t go outside. Not much space in side if Tweetup goes massive

4. The Crown. Has a terrace, which can get busy in the evening.

5. The Princess of Wales. Trumps the Crown in terrace stakes, as it potenially has whole heath. Also has shrine to Blackheath Rugby – my troubled mistress.

That as far as I got – but I think I covered the drinking spots of the village. – thoughts? via the comments.

So coming tomorrow the voting begins. – Don’t forget to vote on the date.

So we are going to meet in Blackheath – Pub to be selected which will be next vote. We need to fix a date. I suggest either a Wednesday or Thursday evening

Date for your Dairies

To give everyone chance to block out thier busy social diaries, I’m proposing to have the Tweetup on the last week of June / first of July (Week commencing 28 June). Not sure of the actual day, but I like to think the Wednesday or Thursday night suit most.

Just to clear something up, the invite is open to everyone, not just those of us who live and and work in South East London.

Location, Location, Location

The first choice we have to make is the location. Although this is a South East London get together, the orginal thinking was for a meeting in either Greenwich town centre or Blackheath village. Some else suggested a neutral venue between the two villages.

So the first poll is, Blackheath, Greenwich or the Neutral Zone.

Why a South East London Tweetup

Everyone must have of heard of twitter? You know, that website where famous people like Jonathon Ross or Stephen Fry communicate with us lesser mortals though 140 character messages.

Well not just the rich and famous use Twitter, here in Gods own country, South East London a small community of Tweeters have come together to share there lives, loves, experiences, worries and jokes through tweeting. Its like a conversation in a pub, some complaining of the train service, other laughing at others jokes, while others stand at the bar and listen.

One evening a fellow twitter suggested that we should meet for drink, and I thought what a good idea but why not extend the invite to those Twitters who live and work in SE London. In particular Greenwich, Blackheath, Charlton and Woolwich. That would help us to put names to faces and more importantly, although Twitter is a great communication medium, this information revolution still hasn’t bettered face to face chats, be it round the camp fire or the local beer garden.

So the challenge is going to be: Find a night, find a pub, do we want a theme? how do we spread the word so even more of those blessed to have a link to this part of London don’t miss out on the event of the summer.

Now as I came up with the idea, I could just say Friday, my local, be there or be square. But as we’re now living in this new world, of people power I thought it would be good to open the logistics of the night up to us all. So over the next few days I’m going to run simple polls so everyone can have a say about the night.
